Chapter 1

The time is somewhere between the years 1740 and 1745. The place is a
wilderness area of what later becomes known as New York State. Two men are
seen walking among the tangled trees of the forest. One of them, a "man of
gigantic mould," is Henry March. His white friends have named him Hurry Harry,
and the Indians have nicknamed him Hurry Skurry because of his "dashing,
reckless, off-hand manner." His "physical restlessness" keeps him
"constantly on the move." He is outstanding because of his great height ...
