I'M LOOKING forward to Garry O'Connor's novel on Geoffrey Chaucer, but I was surprised to read his claims (Mail) because there's nothing new in the very credible theory that Chaucer raped Cecila Chaumpaigne.
Historians have known about these documents and debated them openly for years, as I discovered while researching my forthcoming biography of Chaucer's sister-in-law, Katherine Swynford. Nor is there any evidence to support the claim that Chaucer's wife Philippa de Roet (Katherine's sister) was ever John of Gaunt's mistress - a theory that has now largely been discredited. ...
