"Here is God's plenty," said the great poet John Dryden of his predecessor Geoffrey Chaucer. And that, too, is what I'd say about the wild profusion of beautiful and hope-giving books I'd like to give to all children this somber season in the grown-up world. In almost inexhaustible exuberance the books run the gamut from long- awaited new works by picture book giants like Raymond Briggs to books by little-known creators expressing unsentimental affection, or displaying art and design worthy of the children.
