It was Geoffrey Chaucer, the 14th century poet, who started the custom of exchanging valentines. He wrote that birds began to pair off on Feb. 14. Later it became a romantic time for humans to pair off as well. Since we owe the celebration of this lovely day to the birds, we should be sure our feathered friends are being fed on this and every other wintry day.
