Introduction:

The Canon's Yeoman's Tale is for several reasons a baffling performance.
Neither the Canon nor his Yeoman have been described in the General Prologue
(or mentioned at all previously) and there is a question as to whether Chaucer
had planned this sequence from the beginning or simply added it as an
afterthought. It concerns a worker in alchemy, a pseudo-science popular in the
Middle Ages, but involved with all sorts of nonsensical theories and mystical
jargon, and the question of how familiar Chaucer was with it, ...
