The Summoner's Tale
Introduction:
The Summoner's Tale is probably Chaucer's version of a popular story like
the Friar's Tale, although no source for it is known to exist. The difference
lies mainly in the fact that the Summoner's Tale, while it does not contain
the sort of witty reference to obscene and immoral behavior seen in the
Friar's Tale, does go beyond it in unabashed vulgarity. The tale is overlaid
with elements of academic discussion, however; in fact, the humor depends to a
great extent upon the absurd misapplication of scholastic quiddities ...
