The Friar's Tale

Introduction:

The Friar's Tale is a type of popular tale; it deals bluntly and vividly
with the vicious misconduct of clerical office-holders, and it speaks from a
point of view sympathetic to the frequently helpless victims of the lechery,
greed, and callous unconcern of predatory churchmen. At the same time Chaucer
adds to the plot an element of learned discussion of some nice theological
points concerning the presence of demons in the world, and their power over
