THIS is a story about the "H" word. A woman who almost became my mother-in-law warned my ex-boyfriend that, nice as I was, I would never be a good housewife. I felt a rush of perverse pride.
As the writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman said: "A house does not need a wife any more than it needs a husband." Yet, the decision last week by the Scottish Women's Rural Institute to retain the term "housewife" in the title of Housewives' Committee had me contemplating the issue. Was this evidence of deep-set traditionalism or an act of rebellion against political correctness?
