BACK when I was a child, the Victorian classics were central to my small home library: Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking- Glass, The Princess And The Goblin, The Water Babies.

To reread them as an adult is to get a whiff of something that is irrecoverable - the experience of early reading.

I read them then as a novice, as an innocent, skipping the bits I couldn't follow, homing in on the passages that appealed.
