THE WATER BABIES *** ARCHES, GLASGOW

THERE'S a moment at the beginning of Andy Arnold's small-scale adaptation of The Water Babies when it looks like being one of the shows of the season. Plunging straight into the narrative of Charles Kingsley's haunting Victorian novel about a little chimney-sweep and his underwater adventures, it offers us a hugely sympathetic and skilful boy-hero in Neil Campbell's Tom, a clever mixture of live and projected visual imagery, strong storytelling from Stuart Ennis, and some terrific live music and sound from musician Alasdair Macrae.
