As the bells chime 12 at the end of 2003, Americans will sing along with, or listen to, a rendition of "Auld Lang Syne." They'll toast the new year with a flute of bubbly; and watch the sparkling ball drop in New York City's Times Square.

The next day, as they open their eyes to 2004, they'll dine on pork and sauerkraut or, maybe, doughnuts; watch the colorful Mummer's or Rose Bowl parades; and open their shiny new calendars to that first day of January.

And, they'll do these things with little more than a passing thought. It's all part of one year slipping into another.
