Caesar And Cleopatra: An Overview
A History (1898)
Introduction
By "history" Shaw means to reminds us that his play is composed of
historical events and personages, all freely interpreted. The action is set in
XXXIII Dynasty of Egypt, October 48 to March 47 B.C. The chief sources of the
play are Shaw's reading in the ancient historian Plutarch, in Shakespeare's
Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra, and in a nineteenth century account of
Rome by the German historian, Mommsen. In addition, there is his own thinking
