Charles Dickens chronicled the horrors and abuses that were so often a part of a Victorian childhood.

But it was Frances Hodgson Burnett, a British-born writer who spent much of her life in Knoxville, Tenn., who detailed the inner life of the children of that period, and of the subsequent Edwardian era. Her most notable efforts were Little Lord Fauntleroy and The Secret Garden, her classic children's book, published in 1911.
