IT'S GREAT TO SEE YOUNGSTERS EXCITED ABOUT BOOKS

One of the greatest joys of my childhood was curling up with "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett or a Roald Dahl story to escape to a world of bizarre and captivating people as well as adventurous places.

That is why it frightens me to constantly read stories about the rising illiteracy rate of children in this country.

But on Monday at Howard Roosa Elementary School, it gave me such hope to see eager kids excited about receiving their very own free book, courtesy of the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corp. 21st Century Community Learning Center.
