The literary work of Ambrose Bierce contains biting criticisms of treasured American institutions, including religion, politics and education. This is much in evidence in his 'The Devil's Dictionary,' where the acerbic writer defined religious, educational and political terms with irreverent humor. It is unfortunate that his literary contribution is upstaged by his mysterious disappearance in Mexico, where he travelled with Pancho Villa's revolutionaries.
