The Poetics
Introduction:
Of the three works which Aristotle classifies under the productive
sciences, two seem to the modern reader to belong unquestionably to the
ancient world. These are the Topics, or "how to make a good argument," and the
Rhetoric, or "how to give a good speech." As the Greeks were a nation of
inveterate talkers, it is not surprising that, with Aristotle, argument and
speechmaking should have come into their own as skills or arts which the
lawyer and the officeholder must needs learn, if they are to be successful.
