Caroline Thompson's admirable first feature, a remake of Anna Sewell's "Black Beauty," was released without fanfare three summers ago and failed to rally the literate family audience that should have welcomed it. Her new feature, "Buddy," proves a well-meaning fiasco. It demands an interlocked flair for domestic comedy and costume masquerade that eludes Miss Thompson grievously.
