Scenes created by Wesley Dennis have filled the dreams of countless young horse lovers over the years. His watercolors and sketches bring the classic horses of children's literature -- Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague, John Steinbeck's Red Pony and Anna Sewell's Black Beauty -- to life.

Hanging above the mantle in his son's Middleburg living room is a little-known painting in which the late artist captured his own dream. Winged angels look down on a tired polo pony and his rider. An emu, a dog and a duck tag along. Saint Peter stands ready to greet them with three fresh ponies.
