BROWSING the used booksellers' bins along the quais of the Seine can still be a good, if misleading, literary education. Nowadays only a few high-minded dealers offer literature. The selection doesn't reflect literary history so much as it does what the French actually bought and read in, say, the early decades of the 20th century.
