Most runners tend to run the first miles of a race faster than the final miles, but you're more likely to run a faster time if you balance your run by holding back some at the beginning and then try to run the second half of the race at the same pace as the first half.
Along with a faster time, you'll enjoy passing more runners near the end than will pass you. Try it, you'll like it.
