Thaïs. Opera in 3 acts by Massenet; text by Louis Gallet, after Anatole France's novel (1890). Prem. Paris, O, 16 Mar. 1894.

Egypt, 4th cent. Athanaël (bar), a young coenobite monk, resolves to persuade the courtesan Thaïs (sop) to return to a virtuous life. Eventually she allows him to take her to a convent. But unable to forget her, Athanaël returns to the convent, where Thaïs lies dying. As she expresses her gratitude to him for saving her soul, he collapses in anguish over the physical love for her that has overcome him.
