What should children read in elementary school? Education Secretary William J. Bennett provided his suggested reading list last week in his report on a model elementary-school curriculum. Here are some of his choices:

Kindergarten through grade 3:

"Behind the Back of the Mountain: Black Folktales from Southern Africa," Verna Aardema.

"Aesop for Children."

"Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales."

"Wiley and the Hairy Man," Molly Bang.

"Once in Puerto Rico," Pura Belpre.
