    Some that I can recall:

    Madeline L'Engle's "Wrinkle in Time"
    The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings
    Escape from Witch Mountain
    A Spell for Chameleon
    Pippi Longstocking
    Zelazny's Amber books.

I think I read Stevenson at that age, but it was in French translation, not sure how difficult the original English would be for a child.

I read The Hobbit by Tolkien and The Prince and the Pauper by Twain in the original English as a child, and don't remember having difficulty with either.

In a more girly mode, L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables seems to have had lasting appeal.

Edit: Since you're in Denmark I'm going to assume there's no use recommending the literary fairy tales of Anderson, Wilde's short collection of fairy tales is equally enchanting and I'll second that recommendation.

I read books like Redwall, Harry Potter, and plenty of fantasy and comic books.
I was 10 about 7 years ago, so a lot of kid's fiction was written. It was a lot different then, unlike the earlier times, where kid's fiction wasn't as separate a market.

"The Witches" and "Charlie and the chocolate factory" by Roald Dahl. Also books by Astrid Lindgren.
There is hope, but not for us.

Goosebump books and other contemporary novels. Maybe a few Stephen King books as well.

    The Redwall series
Greek myths and legends (possibly abridged, though I don't recall exactly)
    Goosebumps
    The Chronicles of Narnia
    Grimm's Fairy Tales

And then of course any sort of pre teen type novel I happened to stumble upon.
