HIim trying to come up a thesis for a literary analysis. I know i want to use the theme of love and it's conquer over any obstacle (Darcy and Elizabeth's love). I want to use the characters(maybe Lady Catherine for one) to prove this. Just having trouble forming this into a good thesis statement.
Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's love overcame many obstacles. One of them was Lady Catherine's persistence in making sure that they wouldn't end up together. When she visited Elizabeth to insist that she deny Mr. Darcy's love should he profess it to her, but Elizabeth refused and said she would do no such thing. Imagine speaking the way Elizabeth did to someone so powerful as Lady Catherine! That's how much she loves Mr. Darcy. After seeing Elizabeth, Lady Catherine left to attack Mr. Darcy. She simply would not allow someone like Elizabeth to marry her nephew, but Mr. Darcy didn't care. He refused his own aunt because of his ardent love for Elizabeth. Another one of the obstacles Lizzie and Darcy had to overcome was, well, themselves! Elizabeth overcame her prejudice of Mr. Darcy and realized what a wonderful man he is, and Darcy overcame Elizabeth's low class and the wants of his family and friends. In fact, Mr. Darcy had the biggest obstacles of all. He overcame the pride and conceit in his nature which had forced Elizabeth to refuse him. In other words, he changed himself just to please the one he loves. Not many guys would do that in this day and age, would they? Darcy also went after Lydia and Wickham in London which forced him to constantly meet with people he absolutely detested (Mrs. Younge and Wickham). And why? Because Lydia is Elizabeth's sister, of course! He went to all that trouble for Elizabeth. Looking for a strong love that will last forever? Read Pride and Prejudice.
I agree with the obstacles. Mostly, it has to come with the fact that they are both from different social boundaries and to wed together would mean that they overcome the odds and go against society norms to achieve unconditional love. And I certainly believe that Mr. Darcy has the greater obstacles. After all, the marriage proved to be an advantage and upgrading for Elizabeth to enter into good society while for Mr. Darcy, it could almost be interpreted as a degradation. Besides, Mr. Darcy loved Elizabeth first and had to bear her admiration of a man he deeply hates.
I totally agree! And Mr. Darcy also had to overcome Elizabeth's degrading family. I wouldn't exactly want Mrs. Bennet for a mother-in-law or Mr. Wickham for a brother-in-law, but love conquers all in Mr. Darcy's case!
