    Why would I do that?

    Are you afraid of heights?
I'm weary with right-angles, abbreviated daylight,
Waiting for a winter to be done.
Why do I still see you in every mirrored window,
In all that I could never overcome?

    Sometimes

Should I keep reading A Tale of Two Cities? I really just don't like Dickens and I thought I'd give him another try, but. . . .

If the second try doesn't work for you, why bother?

I read Great Expectations and hated it. What would you recommend I read for Dickens' second chance?

Ugh. . . .I'm the last person who should answer this question. I'm nearly 100 pages into Tale of Two Cities and I don't know how much more I can endure. Maybe a short (really short) story?

What does the best literature do for us? (that is, how does it make us better?)

We learn from our past. Those who choose to ignore the mistakes of history are bound to repeat them.

What is the greatest mistake of history that we should pull all stops in order to keep from repeating?

    Prohibition

which period of history interests you most?

"But do you really, seriously, Major Scobie," Dr. Sykes asked, "believe in hell?"
    "Oh, yes, I do."
    "In flames and torment?"
"Perhaps not quite that. They tell us it may be a permanent sense of loss."
"That sort of hell wouldn't worry me," Fellowes said.
"Perhaps you've never lost anything of importance," Scobie said.
