I have to say that Twain is a master at masking his comedy. He weaves insults, for example to the French and people as a general, into his character's dialect. He cuts down mankind but most don't even notice because he hides it in the story.

The contrast between freedom and civilization permeates the novel, and Huck's struggle for natural freedom (freedom from society) mirrors the more important struggle of Jim, who struggles for social freedom (freedom with society) Both Huck and Jim search for freedom durning their adventure down the mississippi, and both fin that civilization presents a large obstacle to obtaining their dream.
