    Tervehdys (=greetings)

My late parents and grandparents were devoted left-wing communists and they had a lot of wonderful ideas. One of the ideas was: a worker, even the lowest rank, has an obligation to cultivate one´s mind by reading and studying. Most of their ideas I did not abduct, and they are out of fashion anyway, but this one I selected to be taken seriously. I became a forest worker who reads a lot.

English is not my mother´s tongue, it is an odd language called Finnish, and I read Russian and Swedish as well. I left literature written in English aside for years. Recently I came back into this language by reading Irvine Welsh´s novels. So much about uplifting one´s standards... But I am glad I did.

My workmates are not usually readers. Well, in general I chat in the forest with birds, mosquitos, mooses and snakes. So I look for a change to discuss about books and fiction and words and whatever, even though I am far more handy with the chainsaw than I am with the pencil (or pad).

    Hello all,
I haven't a soul to discuss books with. Tragic! I am here now, so hopefully you all will be a remedy to me. Outside of the Bible I read about 95% fiction (no jokes please :.)
In my reading I am eternally searching for the perfect fusion of literary merit, interesting plot, and enthralling characters. I read purely for pleasure. If I learn something it is a bonus!

    Hi all,

I'm an avid lover of fiction, mock me if you will

I like to read a range of books from more childrens to very gruesome adult. I am a huge fan of Terry Pratchett, Karin Slaughter, Kelley Armstrong. I love the classics and the oldies, I enjoy the works of Washington Irving, Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I love a book that can make me laugh, cry and put it under my pillow in fear!

I love people suggesting me new books And am lucky enough to live near an old bookstore, where everything costs less than £3! Its one of those old ones where, if your not careful, you will lose yourself in it

My name is Aravona, hello everyone!

Question Hello everyone. I am new to your forum. I have a bible verse question.

I was reading Luke 24:13.................Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem.

Question: After recognizing Christ the two spent the night in Emmaus before going to Jerusalem. Who were the 2 followers of Jesus? One of the followers was Cleopas. Who was the other follower walking with Cleopas to Jerusalem?

    Thanks.

There's a "Religious Texts" forum on this site. You might get quicker, more informed, and more enthusiastic responses on that forum. If you go to the home page and glance down you'll can't miss it.

Have a nice time browing the wonderful world of books and book-worms!
I am a high-school student, and I study Extension English as a subject in year eleven. I chose that subject, because, well, I've always enjoyed English, and was moderately good at it (not straight A's, but good enough), but I wanted to advance my studies and excel in the subject. I also love Drama; it's my favorite and best subject, and it's what makes me going throughout the school week.

I LOVE Harry Potter - more so than anything else in the world - and I have loved it since I was seven, when my parents threw me a Harry Potter-themed party. I still want one for my eighteenth. I guess that's the 'inner child' in me; I think a part of me will always believe in magic, fantasy, etc, because it's a form of escapism for me. I also love the LOTR movies, and the film 'LoveActually.' I only like British romedy films, because they're actually funny. However, I also love the T.V. show 'FRIENDS.' That's the only television program I watch. I love books by Jodi Picoult and Stephen King, and adored 'Little Women' by Louisa May-Alcott, and of course, Jane Austen.

I've enjoyed writing a mini-autobiography, so I'm going to go and explore the rest of this swell site.

    Hi everyone

Pleased to find a community of like-minded people who love the written word.

I'm an avid reader - but am only just now discovering the delights of poetry (reading it and trying to write some as well).
My other keen interests are music, the outdoors (the hint's in my user name) and movies.

I'm looking forward to sharing some thoughts with you and hopefully learning more about literature.

    Thanks

In the fashion of things, ill introduce myself too. I am in my last year of college and i take art, photography, english, literature and political and legal studies along with the compulsory mathmatics which is not a specialty.

I love reading all forms of literature and no doubt i love writting my own pieces. i tend to shy away from publishing my own work due to fear of what others will think and also self doubt which i am wondering how many others also have had self doubt of there own work?

Anyway thankyou Pensive - clever and welcoming idea

Hi, I'm Sérgio! I'm Portuguese, Clinical Psychologist and I'm 37! I entered this site mainly to discuss the Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov! As a curiosity, I have to say that the best book I've ever read was Genesis Revisited - Is Modern Science Catching Up with Ancient Knowledge, by Zecharia Sitchin! I advise everybody this book... it's a must read!

    Hello all!

I'm Heather, but I go by a collection of names, ranging from 'brat' to 'auntie', (even though I'm not really an aunt...) and 'Heath' to 'Hekele'. Call me whatever you want, after all 'What's in a name?"

I was born and raised in Michigan, but after high school I ran as far as I could and moved to the furthest reaches of North America, Alaska. I've been here for nearly three years, attending college as an English major, and I have no plans of leaving. I'm in love with it up here.

Even when our 'April showers' are the final snow storms of the year.

I'm an anime nerd, not a fanatic. I play video games, not obsess over them. I play d20-based rpgs, not dress up like an elf every week and honestly believe I'm a level 9 paladin. (I despise paladins...I play druids and warlords.) I gleefully indulge in daydreams, not 'space out'. I write for pleasure, not for personal gain, (though I would embrace a combination of the two.) I'm chubby, and I really, REALLY don't care what others think about it.

I'm an individual. I embrace my individuality. My writing reflects this. Every character I've ever invented has reflected a facet of myself. Even the villains. No human is squeaky clean; we all have a dark side we hide from both ourselves and the world. My greatest flaws are envy and wrath, so most of my villains reflect this. My greatest strengths are my abilities to hope and love, and most of my heroes embody this. I'm also a combination of many other things, and I embrace those shades of my personality as well.

There you go. This is me. I can't wait to meet more people and show them more of that.

New, Not blue, and want to Improve

Hi Everyone, on this beautiful Spring night. I'm just about to retire from work at the end of this week. And that's wonderful. Poor, but wonderful. And now for the shocking part.....I've never blogged before...and well, I came upon this site trying to research a poem by Alexander Pushkin. I became mesmorized and realized all I've been missing. I used to read the classics and really miss doing so. For light reading I love P.G. Wodehouse...and English Murder mysteries. Of course Christie. I used to read quite a bit of Russian Lit...so, dramatic. And now, maybe more time to do so again. And hopefully, I'll learn something from you. All those great quotes....want to see more and look them up. Sorry, I rambled a bit. Nice to meet you. Margie
