Sinclair used examples of wage-slavery, the corruption of parties, the exploitation of immagrants, alcoholism, child lobor, and many other evils of capitalism to biuld frustration and empathy in the non-socialist reader. Wtihout the book in its whole, present form, it would have not have been as influencial. The entire book is a complete example of the hopelessness leading to socialist conversion. 300+ pages is long though.
You sound like an arrogant student who was "forced" to read this. Please grow up and attain a sense of great literature, obviously Harry Potter isn't doing his part.
if sinclair wanted to talk about socialism and capitalism, he shouldn't have had so many symbols. they're easy enough to find, but if you're not looking for them, you never will. he either should have made the entire book about socialism, instead of the last 3 chapters or he should have finished with jurgis and told the readers what happened to the entire family. i personally hated reading this.
