Well, this book is next on my book queue after I finish with Sense And Sensibility. I just posted this thread as to look for some sort of guide or preview into the book of sorts. Like what characters to look out for? People favourite parts of the story? A small summary plot? In fact, what is this book about in general, and aside from a main plot is there a subplot?

personal opinions don't mean much. Some one could tell you Defoe was a horrible writer. Would you believe it? And if you ask a question, it is not likely to be answered. Do your own work, and look things up.
I thought it was... alright. The 18th century is probably my least favourite literary era. I've only read this and Moll Flanders from Defoe, and although there isn't much in it, I'd say I enjoyed Moll more.

Robinson Crusoe is one of those books that is incredibly important for the history of literature, so in some ways it's worth reading just to help understand what comes after it.
No, you should read it - you might love it! I'm merely giving you my subjective opinion. I'm not a fan of the era, and although it wasn't a bad read, I thought the other Defoe that I read was slightly better. But that's just me... I read medieval poetry for fun, and that's hardly a mainstream hobby, so don't take my opinion as indicative of anything beyond my own taste. Okay, I'll definitely give this book a read after I finish S&S.
As a small boy I read this book so much passionately and of course it fueled my imaginative capacities.

Is there a strong background to the book that you have to know to understand it?
