A well written comment all around. It was engaging and exactly to the point and one does want to continue reading. Obviously, it was hard to read the whole book without wanting to give up, however, well done for persevering!

My opinion of 'Emma' is that here Austen has become preoccupied by style at the expense of interest, plot and substance. There is no denying that she is extremely intelligent and her literary devices of satire, irony etc are well employed. Yet they are far too obvious. Once the book has been picked up the ending is clear; all of Emma's failings as a matchmaker are predictable and the techniques used to display them are simply not substantial enough to be amusing. <br>I found this book at all times a disappointment. Gone is the wit and charm of 'Pride and Prejudice', the freshness of 'Northanger Abbey' and the deep social assesment and critique of 'Mansfield Park'. How anyone can judge this book as one of Austen's best is beyond my understanding.
