what are you, some kind of idiot? or someone who attempts to dig up 'meaning' in everything, other than the meaning which is REALLY OBVIOUS AND IN-YOUR-FACE!!!!!! and how could it be narrated by Rebecca, when for a large part of the book she isn't there? and Scott obviously shows that Brian is just kind of villanous?!?!?! come on, did you even read this book??? geez, you can't even spell BRIAN!!! HA HA HA
<br>Briand de Gilbert, the Templar, is the sole hero and the driving force of the story. I cannot believe my eyes why so many people miss the point. And his story is narrated by the gal, Rebecca. <br><br>First of all, he is the only character who shows any depth. Not the incorporation of idealism such as Ivanhoe and Company, not a typical "rent-a-character" persona like Cedric. <br><br>Second, his "duel" with Ivanhoe. It was suicide, man. Don't you get it? A guy kills himself to save his love. That is the whole point of this work. Yeah, such a device is quite old, but it was written reasonably skillfully.<br><br>Third, What is happening inside Rebecca? Is she so dumb that she does not realize the infatuation of Gilbert? Not at all. She fully realize the meaning of his last sacrifice, and so "disappears". Rebecca is the main narrator of the whole story and with her disappearance, the story ends.<br><br>Rebecca's Narration is excellent, especially when she broadcast the battle of the castle to the invalid Ivanhoe. If she were around today, she could get a job at ESPN easily.<br><br>
