I would just like to say that Hawthorne is one of the greatest authors of our time and if you would like to critisize the way he writes then do it somewhere else. His " over analyzation" of the characters is just one of the wonderful ways that his story appear. He tells a simple story but puts a huge meaning into it.

The book had a very good message, but was extremely uninteresting. Every character in the book had some extreme problems with their self perseption, and over analyzed evry little thing that happened to them. Basicly they took everything a little bit too seriously. It really made me appriciate that I wasn't born in the Puritan age because with a srict moral code of laws like that I would've been burned at the stake.
