    I think that Dickens was trying to get across the fact that being motivated solely by the want for money is a terrible way to live. Considering the times that he lived in, becoming disenchanted with the Industrial Revolution. The fact that the story takes place during Christmas only serves to accentuate his point. In the holiday season, the season of giving and merriment, Scrooge was still his same old money grubbing self. Ignorance and want breed poverty. These two spirits in the story are a very important to the story and to the times that Dickens lived in.
