- The divorced were almost a social outcasts.
- The family stayed together 'for the children'.
- Blood is thicker than water.
- With few woman working, the wife relied on the husband for income.
I think the family stayed together because they had to. Times were tough for a mining family. They only gained a level of financial security when the children were grown.
