    • The divorced were almost a social outcasts.

    • The family stayed together 'for the children'.

    • Blood is thicker than water.

    • With few woman working, the wife relied on the husband for income.

    mostly money

    I think the family stayed together because they had to. Times were tough for a mining family. They only gained a level of financial security when the children were grown.
