Just lately I have been exploring Romantic and Post-Romantic English classical music. The composer Frederick Delius wrote a marvelous opera entitled A Village Romeo and Juliet. The libretto was based on a tale by Gottfried Keller entitled, The People of Seldwyla. The tale largely follows the unhappy love affair between the children of two rival feuding farmers (sound familiar?). I'm uncertain how directly influenced Keller's tale is (not having read it) but it (and Delius' libretto) might be more obscure examples worthy of looking into.
While we're on the topic of musical adaptions... West Side Story should be an obvious one.
