    'a woman, draped and blindfolded, carrying a lighted torch."
    this passage (pg 29 in my book,) is making refernece to the goddess Astraea, who was the goddess of justice. Astraea is often pictured as being blindfolded, like an impartial judge, while liberty is often pictured as carrying a lighted torch. if you need more, please post another thread, i have a paper of my own that i need to get cracking on. I will get back to you later.

    There are also the two knitting women who are dressed in black at the beginning of the novel. Many people have parsed them as symbolic of the Greek Fates (or Parcae) who spin and cut the threads that represent each man's life. When the thread is cut, the man whom it represent dies.
