    Adoptin and Adapting (Toby, part I)

    Toby

    I. Adopting and Adapting

    I brought the handsome animal home,
    sparing him the shelter's syringe;
    watched the old cat acclimate
    to a place that wasn't a cage,
    his worry-glossed eyes wide, peeking
    meekly from the open carrier,
    the massive frame of him trembling,
    his nervous nose twitching,
    sniffing the well-worn gray carpet
    while creeping forward into the light -
    curiously, cautiously touring my apartment -
    exploring the rooms of new life.

    You caught the atmosphere of this one really nicely, X, very impressive use of deep-image language with mix of misty portent...this coming with a happy ending.

    "He was nauseous with regret when he saw her face again, and when, as of yore, he pleaded and begged at her knees for the joy of her being. She understood Neal; she stroked his hair; she knew he was mad."

    Great stuff Xillus.

    'his worry-glossed eyes wide' was a line that really came at me, as did 'peeking/meekly'.Through the visual imagery of the poem I feel like I'm there.
