    isolation

Yes, Grendel, and then Grendel's mother. Perhaps Grendels mother is the most isolated. She lives at the bottom of a deep lake alone after the death of her son.

Beowulf is also isolated, because he is alone among people who are not his close kin, the Danes, in the first half of the story. He is also the only one with the ability to deal with Grendel. He dives into the lake to do battle alone, as noone else has the ability to do so.
Beowulf is also isolated as a king. He can only find one of his men, Wiglaf, who dares to go with him and challenge the dragon in Beowulf's last battle.

Just some ideas. Look for more in the text.

The model of a ancient major warrior

"Beowulf" is a model warrior. He know who he works for and who he defends. He knows how to introduce himself to strangers, he knows how to talk, he is a completely socialized fellow...which is one of the reasons he is held forth as a model. If your clan or tribe or kingdom has problems, he's the sort of fellow who is going to address them without disturbing the social order or weakening the home team.

The Grendelkin skulk around the outer borders. They can't talk, they hate music, they life in caves. The are the anti-Beowulf. No clan, no loyalties, not get togethers in pubs and meadhalls.

Speaking of pubs and meadhalls. Feel free to drop by the Boar's Helm Pub if you have an questions about Beowulf. http://www.boars-helm-pub.org

If Grendel had friends... he would have been invited to Herot instead of crashing the party and eating everyone. Feel my drift?
