    Skull faced man

When winston is captured and placed in containment, another man enters the room and hee notices that the man is dying of starvation. After the beating of the chinless man, the officer walks in and signals for the skull faced man to be brought to room 101. As he begs not to be dragged there, he offers to turn in his family, have there throats cut, and he would stand by and watch.

Why would he offer to have his family killed instead of him? Does room 101 have that big of an impact on society?

Why wouldn't you? Most people value their own lives over the lives of others no matter how close. If you could escape torture and death you would offer anything to save yourself.
The wish to acquire more is admittedly a very natural and common thing; and when men succeed in this they are always praised rather than condemned. But when they lack the ability to do so and yet want to acquire more at all costs, they deserve condemnation for their mistakes.

So for example you would have your mother killed instead of yourself? I fail to see why you would want to keep your own life instead of the one you love.

Room 101 doesn't have any impact on society, it has an impact on the individual being taken there.

Room 101 exploits irrational phobia, which is why O'Brien emphasises that the fear needn't even be something mortal. A person with a arachnophobia isn't able to give any other response than irrational fear, and part of that is embodied by trying to project the physical nature of the threat onto someone else. That's why, when Winston caries out to do it Julia, O'Brien knows he has broken him.

That's how phobias work and why the Thought Police exploit them.

I value my life over all others. If i was faced with death and could stay alive by killing someone i would. And i wouldn't think twice about it. If you were faced with that situation you would think differently.

To begin with, the people of Oceania do not love the same way that today's people do. Therefore, his family would not mean as much to him as it would to us. Also, this man was about to be faced with his worst fear. Whatever he is afraid of then is worse than watching his family die, at least to him. This man has been tortured and starved, and he most likely would at this point to anything in order for the pain to stop.

i think atheist is right again, the whole concept of room 101 is your own worst nightmare that deepest darkest place, and everybody's is different.that innermost fear that you just cannot tolerate or bear bringing to the surface.
is it not the wider concept of the inner betrayal that winston and julia thought that the party could not get them to do but did.they could torture you, beat you, keep you in constant light, starve and drug you but never make you betray the ones you loved.
i think 1984 emphasises that it is possible to make that ultimate betrayal and mean it.think of the worst torture you can imagine and what and who you might betray in order to not face that worst nightmare of your own.

As said in 1984, "There are no heroes in pain" all you can think of while experiencing it is how are you going to stop it. There also are no heroes in death no matter what you want to live.

Yep. The human brain is not only the coolest thing in the universe - in my opinion - it's also the scariest. On one hand, a device able to detect nuances in aesthetics that no other species will ever appreciate; on the other, a dark and horrifying place that many people are cast into through no fault of their own, but are forced to occupy by mental illness.

That the brain is imperfect is no more a reason to claim "weakness" than a missing limb would earn a person with a disability the name "cripple".

Yet the brain is the source of our intelligence and power over all other species.
The brain almost...dare i say contradicts itself

That is just sad. You should always value life no matter if it is yours or someone elses. If I had to be killed or have someone I loved killed i would kill myself, because I could not live thinking that I killed a person, so that I can live my life the way I felt like living it. Think about the people you would be hurting with one death. No one has nobody, we all have atleast one person that makes us happy.

I think this is another example of how the people of Oceania have no emotion left. If he truly loved his family he would not have offered them, but because there is no emotion left inside these people they do not feel the love toward their families that most people feel today. I can understand him not wanting to go to room 101, but offering his family shows how emotionally detatched these people really are.

Does end really always justify the mean, Nicolo? Then ask your mother would she choose her life or yours, no matter of her desire for life. How about your children, would you kill them also? Could you live with that?

Do not say that is sad. Do not criticize who i am. I do things for myself, i do things to better myself in life not others. I don't care who i would hurt. Feelings are weakness. I wouldn't feel anything. I would not care. As long as i live another day then i did the right thing. Do not question my morals or my values, that is your opinion. Do not criticize me.
