"The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless and yet be determined to make them otherwise."
-- F. Scott Fitzgerald

Hello Everyone,
As I must return to another project, this is just a brief note to say that I am glad to be among you, and I am looking forward to many years of literature debates and other fun discussions.
My interests include working on my personal websites, writing movies and television reviews, commentaries, poetry, and fiction. I listen to a variety of music, and whenever I can, I attend a good movie, the opera, live classical music performances, and doing digital artwork for web use. The latter is an ongoing learning process that I devote a lot of time in developing it.
I love classical literature and artwork, and it has been said that to attract and hold my attention a man would have to be a writer and 500 or more years of age.
Sorry guys, but after some self-eval, I have come to believe there is much truth in this statement.
Peace.![]()

Ok, so I am bit annoyed because I accidently pressed a wrong button and deleted my lovely and engaging introduction.... so, here it is, less eloquent and shorter.
I am a young English teacher at a high school in VA. Went to IU, planning on getting my masters in literature from George Mason University.
Fav. authors: Kurt Vonnegut, David Sedaris, and 19th century literature (British).
I'm movie buff and enjoy going to concerts (followed Radiohead around the midwest this summer).
Not what I wanted to say exactly, but it will have to do for now. (disclaimer: my sarcasm does not often come through easily on the computer, but it's there).
Greetings!
Thank you for letting me join your vibrant community. I am presently working in the agribusiness and marketing services of the agriculture department here in the Philippines. One of my hobbies is poetry writing and when I read in your web you christmas poetry competition, I am inclined to join. I wish to best for this particular group. God Bless!

Hello, my name is John, however as that name was taken I settled on the nom-de-plume Ashurbanipal. I have been on the internet for years and posting on something awful and 7 then 99chan's /lit/.
However, I have never actually joined a forum devoted entirely to the subject of literature; I have high hopes.
I teach English as a second language and have been traveling the world doing this for a few years now. After a short stint in India next month I shall return to Edinburgh and begin work on my Doctorate in English Literature.
I am a huge fan of Proust.
To introduce myself... Hmmm. For a raging egoist this presents a problem. Whatever I say must be taken with a grain of salt (better yet a whole box). I am 64 years of age and hold multiple degrees; AACS, BSCS, MA(Theo.), BSME, BA (Lit), MA (lit), PhD Lit. I am, without a doubt, over qualified for any type of employment; that is why I am retired and living in Ghana. I grew up in America and served in the military (US Marines, US Army, US Army Reserve, Arizona National Guard). I am the author of the 'Gunny Harold' series of short stories, the short story and script for 'The Creature', and numerous other short stories and books. Most of which have made literature history for being the most unread stories in the world.
This is not a problem for me; I write for MY pleasure, not for the pleasure of some unknown reader. I have been told that my stories are entertaining, and sometimes enlightening. There is an old saying, 'Damned by faint praise.' Well, that, too, is OK with me. I love to read, and to write. I seek knowledge every day of my life.
My philosophy of life is very simplistic. It serves both as my philosophy and my religion: Live every day in such a way that you never intentionally hurt another human being. And when you do (we all make mistakes) try to make amends.
My favorite true story is about the ability to apply knowledge or experience or understanding or common sense and insight. It comes in the form of a converstation that I had with one of my theology/philosophy professors by the name of Brother Joseph. We had spent two hours of class discussion on the wisdom of some of the Greek philosophers; Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, and some others. At the end of the class I went up to Brother Joseph and asked, "Brother, it is easy to see the wisdom in the writings of someone long dead. They have been analyzed and poured over by thousands of philosophers and thinkers. But, Brother, how do I know a wise man when I meet one today?"
Brother Joseph was about sixty-five and had a very cherubic face. With the tonsure of the order, his smile made him seem beatific. He said, "I don't know."
I looked hard at him and then said, "Brother, with all that we have discussed surely you know what to look for in a man to determine if he has wisdom."
He smiled at me again and said, "I don't know."
I said, "Brother, is there anyone that can answer the question for me?"
He smiled again and said, "My boy, you are not listening." He paused and then said again - but this time very slowly, "I... don't... know..." He paused once more and smiled at the look of utter stupidity on my face (I still didn't get it) and then he explained. "The surest sign of a wise man is his willingness to say, 'I don't know.' You see, when he says that, someone teaches him, and he becomes wise."
I always feel it is better to say, "I don't know." And then listen to those who have the knowledge that I lack. Some day I hope that I can say that I am wise.

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."
Hi I am Jake, an eighteen year old male. I feel eighteen years young. One hundred fifty seven thousand eight hundred seventy six hours treading water.
I don't like introductions. It's easier to just show up and stay awhile until it feels the same as where I was.
I don't know why I wrote this. Hey! everyone anyway I don't like being nice. But I think that it's truer to my nature, and hate is truer to my fear.this is wrong, all wrong. a person is like a cavity consistently being filled up; a writer is someone who finds the very act of living strange, as if he can't remove himself from the process; it requires constant analysis and re-evaluation. Ok. hi. see you on the field.
