Posted By Matt: I'm teaching the book for Decathlon, and all I can say is to stick with it. I too thought it a bit boring at first, but once you get into it, you want to find out what happens.

I haven't read this novel yet, but it's interesting to read the above comment, that the first parts of this book is quite boring. Personally I think Hardy was known for his talent in gaining readers' attention by giving interesting openings in the beginning of his novels. Jude and Tess are two good examples.

Thomas Hardy is among my top three authors. However, even I find most of his books a little hard to get into at first. Hardy's books, I like to say, are like tootsie roll pops: it may take a while to get to the tasty prize inside but it's well worth it.

I found Far From the Madding Crowd rather easy to get interested in personally, but Tess was a little harder for me to get into at first.
