    Golden Nellie

    "into the early morn"

    Grizzled grass, hoar-frosted hedge,
seen just into the early dawn,
    a privilege!
    Nellie, my golden spaniel,
    bounds ahead,
    a-barking off her foolish head!
    Hunting dog?..HA!..
    Woe is me!
Best to remember, a mere puppy,
    moving,
    just into the early morn!

    Twelve bore over and under,
    muzzle down!
    Searching trees, searching ground.
    There be pheasant,
    hare, rabbit, plump partridge,
    to be found!
    Moving,
    just into the early *morn!

    Watery sunshine, refreshed air,
    God's munificence, everywhere!
    Wild growing, I see strawberries
    by the ditch...
Wellington boots on wet rushes slip!
And, ever to my great despair,
    golden haired Nellie, running spare!
    Moving,
    just into the early morn!

Whirr and rush beneath the trees!
Lone bird taking flight, young Nellie sees! Too far off, a shot to take, too soon flushed from cover,
    now 'tis too late!
Nellie held back, staccato sharp words!
    Moving,
    just into the early morn!

    Hours later, no bounty bagged,
stiff, weary boned, my footsteps lagged.
    But, golden Nellie, eager yet,
tail a-wagging, at each rustle, leapt!
Now, slowly working our way home,
as, in wide circles Nellie roams!
    Moving,
    no longer...into the early morn!

this poem makes me miss cold weather. i live in a land with no seasons outside of "hot" and "omg it's hot". thanks for sharing. i felt like grabbing a down jacket there for a minute or two.

Nellie is now long gone, but never forgotten!

It is a good memory, along with learning to drive a tractor at ten years of age!

Don't knock it too much, it can get down to thirty below around here! Factor in a brisk wind and we are talking human ice sculptures!!!

The way you frolic, chum! The playful, happy, teasing relationship you have with language and the ins and outs of poetry - it's glorious! Thanks.

Foot healing...One of Nellies pet loves was to playfully nip at my heals! I like to nip and play with the ever changing English language!

I now try to do with poetry what I can no longer do with what is left of my physical endowments!
