What is the last movie you saw? and rate it.

I think "Heat and Dust" was the first Merchant/Ivory film, Janine. Not absolutely sure, but I think so. Their long time screenwriter wrote the book on which it's based.

Gordon Pinsent played Fiona's (Julie Christie's) husband, Grant. He did a wonderful job, he's a fine actor. He gave a very sensitive performance. Olympia Dukakis was also good, but not as good as Christie and Pinsent.

Antiquarian, I don't know him but his performance looked top-notch. Yes, I did notice Dukakis was in it, also. She was shown in the trailer.

Lions Gate made the film. It's based on Alice Munro's short story, "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" which you can find online in "The New Yorker."

Ok, then it is Lions Gate; thank for correcting me on that fact. Maybe it said it was shown at the Sundance Festival. I know I saw Sundance on the trailer. I just watched it again a few hours ago. Either that or I am seeing things. Anything is possible today; been way off kilter all day. Just so I don't start seeing monks, like in the Chekhov short story, Antiquarian.

"Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" is one I still have to see and want to see.

I hope to see that one, too.

Now you sophisticated movie goers aren't going to care about this one, but my wife and I went out to see Ironman!! When I was a teenager my favorite comic book hero was Ironman. Not sure why. He wasn't as well known as Batman or Spiderman or a whole host of other super heros. But if you read Wikipedia's entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Man) he's an engineer, an idustrialists, an anti-communist. Who-hoo. What's not to like. I'm not sure now if I was attracted to him or I tried to become him but somewhere a convergence occured. So many of his qualities I share, except of course I'm not a super hero.

As to the movie. Very good. Robet Downy Jr. plays a great Tony Stark (Ironman). To be honest I imagined Tony Stark to be more mature than the way Downy plays him and portrays a wild, more rambuctious Tony Stark than I remember, but the role seems made for Downy. Jeff Bridges plays a great Obediah Stane, the villain. Terrance Howard is Tony Stark's military sidekick. And Gywnith Paltow plays an unbelievable Miss Pepper Pots, Tony Stark's assistant and almost love interest. Really an enjoyable movie, especially if you like watching Tony Stark create the suit of iron (actually "gold titanium alloy", which does not exist ) that makes him capable of incredible strength and flight. Action s good, but not outrageous or over done. Weapons are cool. Dynamics between Downy and Paltrow is outstanding. The pacing is fast, like a comic book pace, and it slows down as Stark invents the technology.

Sorry if I'm a barbarian in this cosmopolitan thread of movie reviews, but I really loved this one. 9/10.

First off, this is not an exclusive thread, Virgil, and second I really do want to see "Ironman". Hey, my kid grew up on these super heros also, and he even dragged me to a comic book convention once. He used to draw "The Phantom" - think that was his name - all I remember is he was purple and black and pretty awesome looking; Sean did one really nice computer generated drawing, but it was all hand done on the computer, pixel by pixel, older computer but highend type they used to use at News TV stations. I think I have a photo of it somewhere.

I actually did hear about this film (last night) from my friend, she was going to NYC for the weekend and said she was going to go see the film with her husband. I like Robert Downing, Jr. emensely and usually I don't like Paldrow that much, but have seen her is some admirable performances, so I will always give her the benefit of the doubt on seeing her in something new.

Hey, that movie poster is tres cool. I really really like it; and I think Ironman kind of resembles you, in your earlier photos you posted on Lit Net.

Can't wait to see it now - sounds totally entertaining. Good review, Virgil!

I saw Iron man few weeks ago and loved it, hope there is a part two. I went and saw the new Indian Jones film last night 10 out of 10 for me. If you loved the others you will love this so get along and see it. Hopefully we will not have to wait 18yrs for the next one.

I watched the movie "The Notebook", with my HoneyBunny, Suziemb (a member here). I kept threatening to fall asleep to Suzie, but the movie kept me involved. It was special. Suzie kept saying I was like the man, and I kept saying, "Suzie you are like that woman!" It was a beautiful movie about how one person could not stop loving another even though she was fated to forget about him. I read the book, by Nicholas Sparks, (I think), and it was great, but the movie brought it home just a little easier for me. It doesn't hurt when the stars are so pretty. Besides that, Suzie was picking on me all night, and when I tried to leave she made her dog, Maggie, my other girlfriend, sit on me. Those two are a bunch of troublemakers...maybe thats why I'm so sweet on them. Cheers, B

I never watched that movie, though I always planned to. I liked Sparks' other novel A Walk To Remember, and I liked the movie too. Maybe after this review, I'll finally go get the movie and watch it

I've never seen a Star Wars movie. I think that makes me really, really strange. My oldest brother says it's sacrilege, but I don't like fantasy and I don't like anything to do with space or other planets. LOL

Really it's just like Pride and Prejudice only set in a galaxy far far away and has robots.

Some day I'll probably watch them. My oldest brother keeps insisting. It's the other galaxy and the robots that bother me. LOL

If you do decide to try them, start with the older ones first, the newer ones were a bit of a disappointment...at least for me. I often wonder if the older ones really were better or if it's just that I was 10 when I saw the first Star Wars and was easily impressed and since then, it's just been an issue of nostalgia but they seemed to have more heart and of course, they had Harrison Ford!

B-Mental, sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this movie. I would never waste my time to watch it again. My mother and I watched it together and we thought it was so sugary and so unreal in parts. Then we also read the book and that put us over the top. It truly did get annoying when Sparks had to keep repeating some of the same lines - the really gushy ones - I got his point the first time. Don't get me wrong, because I can be very sentimental at times and very much a romantic myself; but I also can see when things are over-dramatized, or overly sentimental. I think actually, the idea behind the film was quite good, but something major was missing in the film and the also, the novel. My mother and I both agreed the book was the last Sparks book we would ever read. Now to each his own, my aunt happens to love Sparks and read a bunch of his books. Glad you enjoyed the movie, B-Mental, and it is always fun to watch movies with friends.

Antiquarian - never saw a "Star Wars" film? That is unbelievable. I am not a big fantasy fan either, but I did enjoy those films. Of course my son had me take him to all three of the originals when they first came out. This was his era and he had all the Star War toys as well, now major collectables. These SW films were such fun and yes, right - they have Harrison Ford in them - so just think of them as "Indiana Jones" films, set in space or as papayahed also said "Pride and Prejudice only set in a galaxy far far away and has robots." The two robots featured are hilarious; one has a British accent. The films are a total amusement ride (very entertaining and charming) with serious plotlines thrown in. But the real fun is the adventure. As Idril pointed out get the older films - they far surpass the newer versions in my opinion. It is a great trilogy; such fun!
