what is that smell- task #4

The boys are playing play dough and that made me thing about smells. Proust was struck by an old memory from his childhood when he drank tea with a bit of cookie in it. Play dough is one of those smells that can make a person remember their childhood. So the question is what smells like what to you?

    I’ll start-

That swimming pool smell makes me think of kindergarten. I went to a big school and I don’t know if there was a swimming pool, but there was that smell and there would also be waves of light reflected on the ceiling of a walkway to the cafeteria as if they were coming from a pool nearby.

There are a lot of smells that remind me of summer, it's all very hard to put into words though. Sort of that salty smell; like the beach; but also like with other general summery smells like freshly cut grass, barbeques and flowers... and... this is getting more and more difficult!

I find when I'm at the shops quite often I'll smell like someone's perfume or deodorant or something and it'll remind me of someone else.

Whenever I smell wet dog, it reminds me of school. In the rain when our uniforms get wet they smell like wet dog

    wet dog

There is a smell that smells like kisses to me. I love that smell, but I can't describe it. The first time I told my husband he smelled like kisses he looked at me like I was crazy. The kids smell that way sometimes too and I kiss them up! Sometimes other people smell like kisses, but I don't kiss them up

We had a house burn with I was four or maybe five. That smell really sticks and it always reminds me of our old house

I like the smell of wet dogs, it's reassuring. It's cute, it's lovely. I love how my dog smells when he's dry too. It's so cozy, it's home, it's love and tenderness, I love plunging my nose in his fur and sniff. He's a cutie.

Oh, I'm with Sprinks about the smell of freshly-cut grass which reminds me of summer.

And, MotherH, I love what you said about the smell of kisses!

    Because someone has to:

I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory.

And landed smack into his shoe

That reminds me of something I say almost every morning when we get off the bus at school:

"Ahhhh.... Don't you just love the smell of bus fumes in the morning?"

It's absolutely horrible getting off that bus and having to cross the road behind it

The smell of coffee brewing in a church reminds me of my childhood. I love the smell of coffee brewing period but it has to be brewing in a church to set off the childhood memories, it may seem weird but there is a very specific difference. Being a pastor's daughter, I spent a ridiculous amount of time in church, we were the first ones there and the last ones to leave, we were there for every single church function and then of course there were the times when I would stop at the church on my way home from school to greet my dad and steal a couple of lemon drops or sugar cubes. It was my playground and I have nothing but wonderful memories about that building and that time and of course, being lutheran, if more than one person was in the church at a time, coffee was being brewed. I just get all warm and fuzzy inside when I smell that smell.

Oh, and there's an REM song that mentions the "smell of swingset hands" and anyone who spent time on a playground when they were little knows what that means and I think it probably brings back a lot of the same memories.
the luminous grass of the prairie hides
feet lovely and still as sleeping doves,
porcelain bones strong enough to carry a life,
    but weighty and unmovable
    As black Dakota hills.

So did mine!!! Our blazers smelled just like wet dog.
I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.

Maybe it's just something about blazers? Our blazers are the worst out of all our uniform items, but sometimes the jumpers do too, but not to the same extent as the blazers.

I can put up with the whole wet dog smell, it's not too bad, but when there's 30 or so kids crammed onto a bus amongst other people all wearing wet blazers and you can't open windows and it gets hot from body heat it just smells really really bad
