    Meaning

    All here seek meaning
    Meaning in everything we do
In our words, in our life
    Of course in our relationship
    In the universe
    Finally in God.

But meaning is not the "thing"
It is a reflection of thought
An image of our own perceptions

There is no meaning in the creation of the universe
    No Biblical accounts hold true

We in vain try to connect meaning
For we feel comfortable with meaning

    We vaingloriously seek for it
    But we fail
For meaning is a ripple and disappears in the vastness of the sea.
Realize the enormity of this universe
There is no meaning in anything

“Those who seek to satisfy the mind of man by hampering it with ceremonies and music and affecting charity and devotion have lost their original nature””

“If water derives lucidity from stillness, how much more the faculties of the mind! The mind of the sage, being in repose, becomes the mirror of the universe, the speculum of all creation.

Is it vanity or glory which causes one to seek meaning? I always thought it was truth, or discovery, or wisdom. I like this entry Blaze.
"I am glad to learn my friend that you had not yet submitted yourself to any of the mouldy laws of Literature."
    -John Muir

"My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends - It gives a lovely light"
    -Edna St. Vincent Millay

Vanity and glory have created meaning to induce fear. Survival and curiosity created meaning to establish language.

Meaning is relative. If a poet writes like no one else before her, it may seem incomprehensible at first, but we cannot be sure if it is meaningless.

We do not understand enough about the universe to know whether it is meaningless or not. This idea of ultimate meaning is ingrained in us from the ideas of sin and final judgment, concepts rife with the potential for abuse, cruelty, prejudice and the perpetuation of ignorance.

There is meaning in many things great and small. If you are speaking of ultimate meaning, who knows what is ultimate. The universe is an outpouring of violence and beauty from which we have made some meaning to live by every day. It is not all false.

The written word or symbol is one manifestation of meaning we share differently, but we share it and that is what is important. We all have the intellectual freedom to say the same thing in different ways. What is even more unifying about poetry is to also say different things the same way because of the meaning of certain conventions.

I would be careful when thinking that there is no meaning to anything, because in so doing it means nothing to say it and so why communicate it at all?

I very much like what you say...

I've been trying very hard to stay 'on top' of my studies, and my control turned on me, because it was a displacement of my need to create 'ultimate' meaning in my life... or maybe it wasn't.

But I do relate in my own way, and your words resonate with me.

For me, if there's such a thing as 'meaning', it can't be deciphered and it's not to be deciphered, it just IS.

=) Thank you (if that was for me). I needed to hear that.

Any more words of wisdom to share? I like, I like.

You've tapped into me... as strange as that might sound.

And sorry to hijack your thread, blazeofglory, but obviously you've started something here... well done.

This was written in the Cinquain thread months ago. I thought it was appropriate after what I said. It was intended for everyone equally. I am glad you took something from it.

    Lovely!

Your poem showers philosophy and like your avatar of the great philosopher Osho, now, you've also grown as a philosophical poet.

blaze, this poem is more powerful than anything I've read in a long time. If I may ask, what is your inspiration something so powerful?
To say that literature is dying is to say that the world is dying.

" 'The most important part of poetry is structure!' one student answers. ' No! The most important part of poetry is sound.' Another retorts. 'No! The most important part of poetry is rhyme!' says the last. 'No!" Says the teacher, ' The most important part of poetry is the meaning, no structure, nor sound nor rhyme alone can define poetry, combine them all and you get meaning.'

Dear Tuniks, thank you very much for your kind words. The source is observation and of course reading everything I read I come across.
