Orwell's father was in the India Civil Service, which Orwell himself worked in later on. The family was in India when Orwell was born.Originally Posted by harlemkid7
As to his mother's family, information is scant, but her father was apparently a "merchant" in India. I imagine he would have been a fairly wealthy type of merchant as, being in the Civil Service, Orwell's father and his family would have expected him to marry someone of equivalent station and a wealthy merchant would fit that bill. Her family were French, with a family name of Limouzin.
