The Great Beyond - REM
I just wanna share this somewhere.....haha.
REM just gives a great feeling, and one of my most vivid memories involves an REM song.....Though this may seem stupid to some, this just seemed so cool and surreal at the time it occured and I've always felt such a great connection to this occasion.
When I was in Sorrento, Italy, I decided to go off the beaten tracks, head into the sort of locals quarters. Anyways when I did this I found my self in back alleys which I thought were very neat because no cars could come through, and only foot traffic reigned. The first place that caught my eye was a gorgeous little bar, a fridge displayed onto the street with a cornucopia of unknown beers. I walked in, and was amazed, it was like nothing I could ever find at home... a tiny place, with a bar equipped with a total of 3 stools, and behind....a shelf of different liquors....also unknown. As I perused all these new bottles a familiar song came on, Losing My Religion by REM. I absentmindedly started singing along, until I noticed another voice singing along to the same song, as I turned around the bartender looked me right in the eyes as we sang line after line of the song. When it finished and I tried talking to him, I realized he didn't speak a word of english.....I bought two beers, one for me, one for my friend and left.
I just vividly remember this experience and I recall it at every step, I jsut love imagining this over and over and over. I don't know why it's so special to me, but I always want to remember it.
"Americans should know the universe itself as a road, as many roads, as roads for traveling souls."
-Walt WhitmanThey have their worries, they’re counting the miles, they’re thinking about where to sleep tonight, how much money for gas, the weather, how they’ll get there—and all the time they’ll get there anyway, you see.
