Wuthering Heights films

Hi,
I want to watch one of Wuthering Heights' films, but there are so many versions I don't know which one to choose, so I'd like to know which one is the best one and especially which one sticks more to the book.

I have five of the films (two are TV series) which I review on one page on my site (http://wuthering-heights.co.uk/watch.htm). I would recommend the 1998 TV series if you are only going to watch one.

The 1939 version with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon is considered the classic one. It is a very good film, but the story in the film is only until chapter 15 or 16, if I remember it correctly.

All the films are good, in their own way, but I would agree that if you watch any of them, watch the 1998 TV adaptation of it. That probably is the best one.

I agree with the previous poster. I actually hated the 1998 TV series with a passion. I was disappointed by the casting and the disjointed mechanical way the script and plot played out.

Although the Fiennes-Binoche film had it's faults, I felt that overall it maintained the mood of the novel, and the casting (at least in terms of Heathcliff, Cathy, Edgar, Hareton, Joseph and Nelly) was imaginative. Fiennes was an incredibly thoughful Heathcliff, and convinced me anyway! I wasn't impressed with Binoche's French accent, though ;-)

Ralph Fiennes was certainly a brilliamt Heathcliff, and although I felt the beginning of the movie didn't create a great enough atmosphere and the film was entirely faithful to the novel, it is worth watching

I recently watched the 1939 film, which really made the book come to life for me. Even though it quickly becomes obvious that some major parts of the novel are left out all together, this is something that ultimately does not cause it to be a let-down. Heathcliff is a bit 'nicer' than in the book and it seems Catherine is 'crazier', but the interaction between the two is really prime. At times it feels more like watching some opera than a film. Some attempts are made to duplicate the novel's dense prose, but I don't think this works in the way the makers intended, but it is still well performed anyway.

It's up on youtube as well, and it's incredibly cheap to order online (I ordered my own copy for just 6 euro's the other day).
