    Cool!

Hang it all, this is one of the most underestimated weapons of Oriental martial arts, unfortunately for those who face it, often finding themselves painted with a bulls-eye before they realize they're fit to be tied. What is this weapon, with sibling weapons used in movies such as Shanghai Noon and Kill Bill?

I know what this is Robin, but I confess I can't find a good picture. I have heard it called a "flying dragon tongue", it is basically a weigted spear point on a thin steel cable. In Shanghi Noon Jackie Chan uses a horseshoe and a rope. I have seen a skilled woman beat every weapon with one of these. I have seen a skilled man do like Jackie, drive the pointed head through targets, small ones at that.

Though these knives are named for earth's gentlest creatures of flight they are very deadly. Flip-flop!

Indeed, the "rope dart," as it is sometimes called, takes an incredible amount of skill to master and control. I heard in an interview or a commentary of some sort that when the idea of using a rope dart came up in Shanghai Noon, Jackie himself gave a sigh of exasperation and commented on how difficult it was!

Could they be...the butterfly knives/swords? I'm curious, though - do you mean the kind with broad blades, used in pairs in traditional martial arts, or the street weapon that conceals the blade between its handles like a fancy switchblade?

Actually, Robin, I own this one: , a butterfly knife, thus the "flip-flop" as I can work it well. I have another also. The trick to these is to make sure you do not forget which edge is sharp. Flipping that sharp edge shut on your finger is something you do only one time. You will never do it twice.

    These are butterfly swords/knives:

I would love a set, but I don't have a set of them. Your move!

Though it is an elegant weapon, no gentleman has ever used it. Though it shines in brightest day and blackest night, Green Lantern has only heard of it. Though the source of its power is crystal clear, few ever understand it. What is it?

The Central Battery? Or the individual lanterns connected to it?

Not quite, Pen - try a different geek universe. I know you'll get it.

Lightsaber. Power source is a crystal, an elegant weapon, perhaps no one will ever understand the Force.

YES!! I knew you'd get it, Pen!! "A more elegant weapon, for a more civilised age," indeed!

Well, the Godfather's often ordered a rubout. But somethimes things had to be done on the QT, for a switch. Just couldn't go in with the usual guns blazing. Then, these came in handy. People would think twice before crossing one yet today.

I'd say stiletto, but I suppose that's too obvious.
    Voices mysterious far and near,
Sound of the wind and sound of the sea,
Are calling and whispering in my ear,
    Whifflingpin! Why stayest thou here?

Pen is it a blade type weapon or is it....the garrotte? silent but deadly.
