INGSOC in the book 1984, is Newspeak for "English Socialism"

In the book, it was expected that when Newspeak had been adopted, and Oldspeak had been to the point of being abolished, that any thought that came about from the principles of INGSOC- should not be acted upon/unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependant on words.

Hope this gives you a little understanding of INGSOC, Tyleeriskool9.

    Ingsoc

Actually, the book O'brien gives Winston gives a pretty good explanation of Ingsoc. I find it interesting that, since Oceania consists of the United States, the former British Empire, the Americas and Australia, Why is it called Ingsoc and not Amerisoc?

    Ingsoc

Ingsoc is basically saying, to keep them in control, keep them stupid. This of course refering to the people of Oceania, the government wants to keep people in complete control so they make the bad seem good, taking away all freedoms.

Ingsoc as one person said was well covered in the "Book of Goldstien" - it is the Three Principle addressed on the side of the MiniTrue building - "War is Peace" - "Freedom is Slavery" - "Ignorance is Strength". It is not merely keeping the people stupid; as O' brian points out, eventually you have to educate them to keep them working, once they have an education where they can compare and think, then the Middle party begins to overthrow the upper or inner party. So the purpose of the philosphy of Ingsoc and Doublethink is too keep they smart to work the machines, but stupid enough to believe only what they are told. If you tell them 2+2=5, they will believe it with out question. The three points addressed must work together - the war must be "long term" (think war on terror), the people must voluntarily accept the restrictions (think PATRIOT ACT), and they must accept what they are told with no question (Think current media).

The long term war allows people to remain in state of 'fear and loathing', and thus as the book says
The social atmosphere is that of a besieged city, where the possession of a lump of horseflesh makes the difference between wealth and poverty. And at the same time the consciousness of being at war, and therefore in danger, makes the handing-over of all power to a small caste seem the natural, unavoidable condition of survival.
Thus Freedom is Slavery and Ignorance is strenght allow the war to be "Forever" with no one questioning why they are short on rations, and keep getting shorter, even though they are told they are getting more and more.

Ingsoc is simply the word for the current type of government "Socialism" that winston lives under, since in the Book of Goldstien it is specially pointed out that there is no difference between the three superpowers. The reason that is called ingsoc is Orwell is English, and we speak english.

    Perhaps because Orwell was English?

PS: I just heard this really funny joke:

    "War is Peace
    Freedom is Slavery
    Ignorance is Strength
    And Bush is President(sp?)"

He chose Ingsoc because he wanted to warn people that the Englsih speaking nations weren't any better than others and could fall into totalitarianism as anywhere.

Ingsoc is a short word in newspeak. It has got similars to other institutions in totalitarian systems like GeStaPo (Geheime Staatspolizei) or Komintern (Communist International), Kominform etc.

For a somewhat amusing(?) analysis of Ingsoc, check-out the dictates of our current Political Correctness and similar language-control devices. (Then again, it might not be politically correct even to suggest such a thing!!!)
